Our Canal
The Southgate/Three Oaks Community Canal system has slowly changed from its original 25 year old design. Erosion, sediment and nutrient deposits, storm water run-off from 5 local neighborhoods, 2 churches, the 7-11 and Vet Clinic continue to flow through our backyards.
Since 2007, various forms of aquatic weeds have obviously surfaced, making themselves at home from March through November each year. Meanwhile, canal resident backyards slope a little more each year into the canal. Luckily, we have formed a partnership with Three Oaks and the City of Virginia Beach to engage in a strategic approach to solving these problems.
Good citizenship and education of our watershed will act to prevent to any further damage to the canal. The Southgate/Three Oaks Canal Committee was formed during the summer of 2010. Since then there has been 7 meetings to discuss what direction we, as a community want to take towards a unified solution with the City of Virginia Beach or what we are capable of doing ourselves.
This page was designed as the focal point for information, upcoming events, historical documentation, and useful links to benefit all citizens on this watershed.
